Humming/Buzzing Sounds
If you are hearing humming or buzzing sounds from your electric hot water heaters, you should not be worried. This is a very usual sound and means the heating component is working and heating the water. It should only be of a slight concern when the noises become consistently louder, which would indicate the component is loose and would need to be tightened.
Tapping or Ticking Sounds
Tapping or ticking sounds are normal for your hot water heater to make. This means that the valves are working to prevent water from flowing backwards. Screeching, Screaming, or Singing Sounds
These sounds may require one of our Oakville plumbers to check the valves to ensure that all the valves are open and set correctly. This sound can sometimes indicate that a valve somewhere is not opened fully and the water is being forced through a smaller opening with pressure. This sound is not a major concern, but could be bothersome, therefore may require some assistance.

Hammering/knocking sounds may not be a direct cause due to the water heater, but may be a result of an unsecure pipe inside the wall, which could damage and cause leakage to the wall if not dealt with. Rumbling, Popping, Crackling Noises
Various components and parts may need to be replaced if you hear any of these sounds. These sounds may be an indication that there is some type of residue build up inside the hot water heater, and may even require draining and flushing. These sounds are common in older tanks, which may have to be replaced.
Clicking Sounds on Tankless Heaters
There is a difference in possible sounds that a tankless heater can make versus a traditional water heater. The clicking sound in a tankless heater is normal and part of how the system works. The clicking sound is a result of the water moving through the heater and being heated on-demand. If the sounds are too unwarranted, this could be caused by excess calcium and mineral deposits building in the system.
